World AIDS Day Statement—Partnerships with Soy Improve Lives for People Living with HIV
Casa Aurora team members who are working to allow soy protein’s benefits to reach families affected by HIV/AIDS. On World AIDS Day, December 1, 2009, the World Soy Foundation would like to recognize the role of partnerships in providing soy protein to people living with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The 2009 AIDS Epidemic Update announced on November 24 highlights the good news that the number of new HIV infections has been reduced by 17 percent over the past eight years. A record 33.4 million people are living with HIV today—more than ever before.
The World Soy Foundation is committed to “bringing nutrition to life” to the malnourished, including people living with HIV. Thanks to partnerships with companies like Cargill and groups like Casa Aurora in Honduras, the World Soy Foundation is seeing exciting responses to the high protein soy that we provide. The World Soy Foundation and its partner, the National Soybean Research Laboratory, have supported Casa Aurora’s program that is allowing Honduran families affected by HIV to receive textured soy protein on a monthly basis. The program also includes microenterprise training.
Together with its partners, the World Soy Foundation can make a difference. Adding soy protein to the diets of people suffering with HIV/AIDS will help them continue to work and care for their families. Expanded partnerships can provide more orphanages and other programs with equipment that will let them produce soyfoods for children as well as have some left over to sell.
Soybean Growers Rally Support for World Soy Foundation 2010 ‘Acre Challenge’
Across the nation, 15 soybean growers have committed to serving as friends of the World Soy Foundation 2010 Acre Challenge and are inviting their fellow growers to join them in contributing the value of an acre of soybeans.
World Food Day on October 16 was an opportunity for these farmer leaders to share how their crop is part of the solution to global hunger. The World Soy Foundation has provided packets of information for the farmer leaders as well as worked with states on communicating the role of farmers in their state in the Acre Challenge. Farmer support is particularly timely in light of new reports that a record one in six people in the world today is malnourished. Contact Vickie Wilks at 314-754-1341 or at vwilks@soy.org to learn about how to support the Acre Challenge.

National Soybean Research Laboratory representatives also conducted the training for CARE staff, homemakers and a local food distributor after a shipping container of textured soy protein produced at Cargill's Cedar Rapids, Iowa facility arrived in Guatemala for use in the program. Team members also demonstrated how rice, beans and textured soy protein can be used in a variety of foods.
Cargill/Perry Foods supports this initiative that contributes to the food security of children in poverty stricken areas. The World Soy Foundation is preparing for launch of a related school feeding effort in early 2010.
